Training Methods

There are four generic reasons for providing training, namely induction training, retraining, upskilling and staff development.

Induction training.

Generally aimed at the new staff and covers general aspects of the organization, such as history and objectives, as well as more specific aspects of the job.

Retraining:

Involves covering some of the same ground as an induction program and generally ensuring that the standards set then are maintained. Retaining may be a necessary feature of the specific tasks being completed, for example, staff performing critical tasks may be required to repeat training on an annual basis. Alternatively, retaining may be provided due to the outcome of an analysis of defect trends, feedback from customers, etc..

Upskilling.

The most common reason for providing training is as a means to up-skill staff. As technology develops, markets change, organizations restructure, new products and processes are introduced, etc., staff need to be trained to allow them to perform their required roles. This may involve operating new machinery, having a different job focus, for example liaising with customers, completing different forms of documentation, etc..

Staff Development.

These are aimed at staff who are taking on new responsibilities, for example an individual getting responsibility for staff performance as a result of a promotion. Development training may be aligned with an individual talking on an educational course, for example a technician may pursue an enhanced technical qualification outside of their work environment and in parallel the work organization may arrange development training to complement the employee’s skills and competence set.

There are a wide variety of training methods. Each has its own positives and negatives. In most organizations a range of such methods will be utilized.

Internal and external courses

– Workshops

– Seminars

– Training films / audio tapes

– Reading material

– Simulations

– Coaching

– Mentoring

– E-Learning

– On the job training

– Team-building exercises

– Sink or swim ? (off you go without any real training)

– Sit by Nellie ? (just sit and look, then your considered trained)

Within each training method, there will be a number of steps which can vary between organizations. Taking “On the job” training as an example, this may involve:

– Provision of “task theory” to the trainee for review (i.e. copies of operating procedures, copies of specifications, copies of records, etc..)

– Demonstration by the trainer on how the task is performed.

– The trainee then works along-side the trainer to develop task understanding.

– The trainee then works under the trainer’s supervision.

– There is then some form of final assessment and training sign-off.

– The trainee is now allowed to work alone as a fully trained individual.
